Back in the old days, people could only send snail mail cards and so only a few people bothered. They were few but much appreciated. With the advent of email, many of us chose the digital route to greetings: no stamps, no cost. Some people complained that these greetings were not as intimate but I believe most of us got more greetings and these digital greetings were still appreciated. Then FB came and suddenly people are pining for the intimacy of email instead of the type and click of social networks. But not me. I love the fact that almost 100 people took even 15 seconds to think of me and wish me well on my birthday. I love the fact that I think of people all year round because I see their posts on FB. Before social networking my constant circle was perhaps 20 people. Now it is hundreds. Some wags have complained that FB has cheapened our relationships and made them shallower. I disagree. My family and close friends are still there and FB has, if anything, brought us even closer. There are many, many others, with whom I probably would have had no continuing contact in the 'good old days,' but with whom I now, thanks to FB and other nets enjoy a relationship. True, not many are coming to the house or sharing a beer, but I see their lives, their loves, their children and grandchildren, and even their lunches (I could be spared the photos of your lunches actually). When I do have a face to face with one of my cyber- friends, we know much of what is going on in each other's lives even when it's been years. That is just great stuff!
There is no possible way I could keep current with over 400 people before this era. I appreciate the opportunity and thank all of my FB friends for allowing me to share this small portion of your lives. Thanks to all for your good wishes.
Love you all madly,
John
